Middle school observes shooting’s 10th anniversary
By Charlotte Tubbs
Ten years after two boys opened fire at Westside Middle School, the campus quietly observed the anniversary Monday by flying flags at half-staff, holding a moment of silence and placing a wreath near the site where four students and a teacher were killed.
Monday was the first time that the anniversary fell on a day when school was in session. All previous anniversaries fell on a day when school was out on spring break or because of staff development, said Westside Consolidated School District Superintendent James P. Best.
“You can see it on the faces of the people that were here,” Best said. “This is a very hard time for them.”
There was no ceremony at the school, but individuals visited the school’s memorial garden, leaving flowers and other mementos in front of the wreath.
